We deliver a book led/novel led curriculum in English which allows all children to have an experience of quality novels and literature. Outside of English lessons, we also deliver discreet phonics, handwriting, spelling and reading sessions outside of the English lessons. Further policies around these different areas can be found below.
Literacy at Knighton Fields is an exciting journey of learning. Throughout this journey children are given the opportunity to access a whole host of different stories and types of writing from all over the world. Our approach to the teaching of literacy is underpinned by an engaging Talk4writing curriculum which allows children of all abilities to develop the skills to become confident speakers and writers over time.
As they develop, children are encouraged to see writing as a powerful means of self – expression, a creative form of communication and to write for a range of purposes. Pupils in time develop the stamina and skills to write at length, with accurate spelling and punctuation.
The writing we do includes narratives, explanations, persuasion, descriptions, comparisons, summaries and evaluations: such writing supports them in rehearsing, understanding and consolidating what they have heard or read. For handwriting we use a cursive script which is modeled and taught by teaching staff
